Planning and Choosing the Right Vacation Bible School Theme

Planning and choosing the right Bible Vacation School Theme can make your program the most brilliant and successful program for your community.

Here are tips to consider when planning:Watch Full Movie Online Streaming Online and Download

  • Establish a mission and purpose of the program.  This creates structure for the entire program.  Is the program centered on character building? Do you have plans to evangelize? Answering these questions will help you determine the best Vacation Bible School Materials you’ll need.
  • Choose your Vacation Bible School Materials and theme.  Most publishers create theologically neutral programs.  Be careful; not all VBS themes can work in your church. Are the attendees mostly from the same church or from different churches? Are they non-church goers? Are you a city church or a suburban church?  What kind of music and interests influences your community?  Are you extending this to Sunday School lessons?
  • Consider your budget.  When purchasing Vacation Bible School Materials from publishers, watch out for additional costs on kits and manuals that may take you by surprise.  If budget is a concern, be creative! You may want to consider Gospel Light VBS.  Some enjoyed Gospel Light VBS for years because of its simplicity and because it can easily be reproduced. A happy user enjoys the fact that they also suggest where you can source other materials.  You can also choose to reuse an old VBS curriculum from 4-5 years back.  Why not?
  • Create a format.  Are you a big congregation with a huge support system?  This is a huge factor to consider for logistics.  It will determine volunteers and length of your program.  A smaller church has smaller staff and may only afford to do a short program.  You can create a rotation schedule, room assignments, etc.
  • Set a date.  Check town activities or fairs you could tie up with.  Check with neighboring churches to see what they have planned.  You can create a unified VBS or at least make sure your church leaders get to set their schedule for the VBS.
  • Recruit volunteers.  Encourage the youth who are past attendees to be active.  Give them Spiritual preparations.  Train them in first aid, and how to respond to emergencies.  Communicate with them the plans.  Create a buddy system with a senior leader.  Let them be pro-active and train them to be future leaders.
  • Create powerful invitations.  Start early and be creative! Some people withdraw when they learn it’s a religious activity.  It can be a sensitive topic.  Don’t hound them.  Let them feel they’re deciding for themselves. Attract kids by activities like skits about VBS or by balloons.  Make them want to join their friends in VBS!

Lastly, Be open to modifications during VBS Week and Learn from past programs!

How to Make Vacation Bible School More Fun

Yes – Hate is such a strong and mean word to use about Bible Vacation School.  But people have been speaking out about things they dislike about Vacation Bible School programs.  Fox News even reported of an incident in New York City where parents were outraged over a VBS invitation.   There’s even an incident where a Church was sued over VBS game injuries.  Some say that the program has become a glorified day care center for most parents.  Others say volunteers are over-worked with all the decorating and planning that they forget about the vital part – Gospel teaching.   Some say the program is even outdated!  Some have even given up in using Vacation Bible School as an effective outreach tool because most non-church member families invited are “one-timers”.

To help deal with these issues; we’ve listed a few ideas to help you make this experience more fun for you and your family. We’re also including a few suggestions on how to attract children to Vacation Bible School.

Here are a few tips:

  • Look for Great Vacation Bible School Materials. The right materials and theme can make a HUGE difference.  It can help ease the burden of planning, and make the program more enticing for the community.  Some themes, for example, may be great for rural kids but not for urban kids.  This will help prevent unwarranted issues in most communities. Read more about “Planning and Choosing the Right VBS Theme.”
  • Train your volunteers spiritual preparation and emergency preparations.  Do not leave activities entirely in the hands of young, inexperienced volunteers.  This will help prevent unwanted injuries of much younger children.  Ministry Leaders and VBS hosts are responsible for programs and not the VBS publishers.  Remember they are all suggestions, which you may always adjust and modify, as you want.  Gospel Light VBS is an amazing program since they keep it simple and it’s easy to modify and reproduce.  Another good publisher is Group Publishing VBS.  Nest Learning has a list of previews for 2013 VBS themes you could check.
  • Create a strategy to FOLLOW-UP on families who joined VBS.  This is what most church members would call Evangelism Strategy to further build on relationships that began during Summer VBS program.  A great follow-up program can help bring the faith back in the Vacation Bible School.
  • Create attractive and inter-active invitations ahead of time.  Build anticipation and amusement of children.  For example, you may use balloons to invite, create pre-VBS season activities like hot air balloon release.  Present short skits on the upcoming VBS.  Make kids want to be there because their friends are there too! Start early, at least a month before the scheduled Summer Bible School.

In the end, problems are only opportunities presenting themselves to make us think of ways to overcome reinvent and be more creative.  A lot of people still love Vacation Bible School and remains significant for their families.

VBS is Significant to My Family and Me

We LOVE taking our kids to Vacation Bible School! Most of you Nest Community readers for sure have their earliest and fond memories of their childhood summers spent in a Vacation Bible School.  Summer IS the season of Vacation Bible School and all over the world preparations are being made for a week of fun.  You’ll find community members busy gathering supplies, candy, snacks and making decorations.  Volunteers are all pitching in making last minute preparations on all activities and bible lessons for children, all to make sure they have the best time.

Lately, even with criticism by other people that Bible Vacation School may have lost its significance, a lot of parents still believe in its purpose.  You’ll find they all have their reasons for their fondness of the program.  Here’s what some have to say:

“Even if they’re not ready to respond in repentance and faith, they will at least have a framework for understanding what it means to relate rightly to God”Trent Henderson, on children hearing the gospel

Every night I received wonderful hugs from some of the children.  I listened as they excitedly told their parents about the story of the night.”  – Mom from Maryland, on why she loves teaching VBS

When I was 12, a friend of mine invited me to VBS.  My dad had passed away earlier that year and my family had long since stopped going to church.  I went to VBS and met a wild & crazy Youth Pastor and a bunch of people who loved Jesus and weren’t afraid to show it.  The next week I went to camp and gave my life to Jesus.” – Coastal Community Church member

“I love VBS for the imprint and the impact it can make on the heart of a child.” –  Jerry Lawrence

“See an elderly, daze woman with glitter and Popsicle sticks in her hair, and you’ll know Vacation Bible School has just let out for the day…”Buck from Chicago

Just like the Coastal Community Church, we believe in bringing the community together, where each one plays a meaningful part and put value on “planting seeds.”  Teaching the Word of God to children should not just be limited to Sunday School Lessons; these programs allow you to teach them about having a personal relationship with Christ.
