Working It Out Part III: The Butterfly Stage

We’ve all seen the Biggest Loser, most of us walking away inspired to get fit and live a healthier life style. Abby Rike’s story is no different; she talks of being cut off from the family and support she had left in her life only to be pushed to her body’s limit and to the point of injury. But her injury didn’t stop her – she kept going in the competition until she was cut and sent home. Even then, Abby never gave up – she kept working out and eating healthy. With help from trainers and nutritionists to lose the weight, she lost 100 lbs in the end!download movie The Visit now

She could not have done it alone though – and she is the first to tell you this. Despite being cut off from communication with the outside world, letters from family and friends along with the rare, but occasional allowed phone calls gave Abby the wings she needed to break from her cocoon and fly again. Her support from the other contestants got her through in between these much needed communications with her family.

And upon returning home, her family and friends support meant more to her than ever. All of this is meant to inspire and motivate all of us – reminding us that we can do it too! We can become healthier and find ourselves again!

But I wonder – can we all REALLY do what Abby did? She lost 100 lbs in a short time frame. She was given the chance to leave her home and lifestyle to do nothing but work out with amazing trainers all day. And even after going home, she opted to not go back to work being offered the chance to work out with some amazing trainers that donated their time to her. This would not be the case for the majority of us –Abby Rike was truly blessed with this opportunity.

While I’m not saying what she did is impossible – I am a strong believer that through Christ we can do anything – but, Abby’s circumstances were one in a million.

As for her closing notes: I was a little shocked by them! Her message throughout the book was inspirational and caring – her tone very quiet and subdued. The last few pages however, became very ‘preach-ey’ and passionate about her views and beliefs. Not once throughout the book does she preach or push her beliefs – but it seems like she was waiting until the very end to throw it at you as a last note.

So I caution you, if you have not read this book, to be prepared for the last few pages. Some of you will agree, others will not, but it is clear that she wanted her voice as a Christian heard.

3 Tips on How to Choose the Right Bible for You

With hundreds of different Bibles and Bible covers to choose from, it’s easy to end up with one that you won’t like.  Choosing the Bible translation that best fits your needs is indeed a bit tricky—like buying a house.  You first need to know what you need in a home before you begin your search.  So before you go out shopping, here are 3 tips you need to remember on how to choose the right Bible for you:

Tip #1:  Know what you want in a Bible.  Do you need one that is written in simple English that’s easy to understand?  Do you want to know the historical significance behind biblical stories?  If you’re not familiar with the order of the books, for example, consider getting a Bible with thumb index.  Are you going to use for a Bible study, or for your course work in school?  If you are reading it with a group of people, ask what translation is recommended or required.  Determining your needs will help you pick which Bible version is best for you.

Tip #2:  Choose a Bible translation that’s perfect for you.  There are so many translations available in bookstores and online, so you will need to do some research.  Some of the common ones are: KJV, NKJV, NIV, NASB, ESV, AMP, TLB, ASV, NIRV, HCSB, TNIV, CEV, YLT, and WNT.  If you want a Bible that’s easy to read and understand, for instance, you might want to consider the New International Version, as this version employs a thought-for-thought concept method called Dynamic Equivalence.  But for a more thorough study of scriptures, go for either the King James Version or the New American Standard Bible.

Tip #3:  Consider your options.  Browse through the Bible version you picked to get a feel of the scripture.  Read a passage and see if you understood it.  Did you easily read the text?  If you have eyesight problems, consider getting a Bible with larger print. Remember, this is something you will use frequently, so it’s wise to be picky.  Shop around and look for great deals.  If you’re working on a budget, consider getting your Bible in paperback.  Quality should be your top priority, but that doesn’t mean going far and beyond your budget.

Southern comedian Anita Renfroe is back with a pitcher of that Big Ol Sweet Iced Tea, and I give this highly refreshing Christian comedy two thumbs-up and 5 full stars for making me laugh so hard, my cheeks actually hurt!

The sassy, hilarious Christian comedian has gone from domesticated mom to YouTube sensation overnight, and it isn’t surprising—the world seems to have fallen in love with Anita’s mint brand of comedy that’s cleverly infused with a sure shot of estrogen, blended with musical parodies and daily hilarities . . . Whoever said comedy has to be offensive and crass certainly hasn’t met Anita!

In her spanking new DVD called Big Ol Sweet Iced Tea, Anita Renfroe will make you laugh with her wacky, out-of-this-world insights, her music and her trademark pop culture parodies including the following songs “Wrinkled Ladies” (my personal favorite, actually) and “Real Love Story”, “Grandma-Sense”, “Miss America Tricks”, “GPS For Babies”, “Apps, Staycations, and Hissy Fits”, “Enough”, and “Parting Wisdom”.

Filmed in her hometown of Atlanta, GA before a sold out crowd, this Christian comedy has gone viral in only a matter of weeks since its release in July 2010.  Everyone agrees; this is absolutely good comedy!

Parent’s Guide To The Empty Nest

Parent's Guide To The Empty Nest By Barbara Rainey and Susan Yates

Parent's Guide To The Empty Nest By Barbara Rainey and Susan Yates

Are you feeling those “empty nest” blues?  Guide To The Empty Nest by Barbara Rainey and Susan Yates is perhaps one of the most helpful books for parents about to begin their “Empty Nest” journey.  If your kids have flown the coop—leaving you dazed about what’s next for you—following these 4 easy remedies can help you battle the feelings of loneliness and emptiness as your kids leave home for college:

Remedy #1:  Learn to let go, but maintain communication. Understand that your role as parents is changing.  Your child is beginning his journey to adulthood, and he will need you to be supportive.  Allow him to make decisions and mistakes. Let him appreciate the value of consequences and the beauty of redemption.  This will prepare him for “adult life”.  Let him live independently, but maintain communication.  Let him decide on his schedule and classes, and even how often he should call you.  The trick here is: don’t overcrowd, or suffocate, him.  Let him come to you in his own terms, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Remedy #2:  Get yourself a good support system. Join a support group, if at all possible.  Talk to other parents whose children recently went away for college, and learn from each other’s experiences.  Don’t hesitate to create new friendships.  You need as much support as you can possibly get at this point.  Like what Barbara Rainey and Susan Yates wrote in the book Guide To The Empty Nest, you don’t have to do this alone.  Always keep that in mind.

Remedy #3:  Find fun things to do instead of worry. Start a new hobby or a creative project, and get yourself busy.  Take that trip you’ve been meaning to for years, but couldn’t because of the kids.  Start painting again.  Volunteer in your community, or start a new business venture.  You can even adopt a new pet if you want!  Do the things you’ve always wanted to, but never had the time or the extra funds to.  This can do wonders for your soul.

Remedy #4:  Stock up on good books and resources.  There are many books, resources, and forums out there like the Guide To The Empty Nest by Barbara Rainey and Susan Yates.  We primarily suggest this book because these two authors have navigated through the same territory before with their kids and are now sharing their personal experiences, as well as those of many other parents.  You learn from their mistakes and successes.

Purity Rings: Promoting Abstinence

Purity Rings also known as Promise Rings, Christian Rings, Abstinence Rings, and Chastity Rings, have gained so much popularity in American society, especially during the Bush administration in the 90’s.  Its boom was a result of an all-out effort to promote safe sex and prevent STI’s and STD’s.  According to the Chicago Tribune, “Under the Bush administration, organizations that [promoted] abstinence and [encouraged] teens to sign virginity pledges or wear purity rings have received federal grants.”  The Pennsylvania Evangelical Church, for instance, has received more than $1 million from the federal government for its subsidiary, “The Silver Ring Thing,” to endorse abstinence and sell its rings in and outside the United States.

Historical analysts, however, have traced its history way back to the 1800’s when young ladies wore rings as a promise to their parents, betrothed and church to remain chaste until finally married.  Today, these rings continue to encourage thousands of teens not only in America, but all over the world, to make the same promise.

Anyone Can Make the Same Pledge. In most cases, parents buy Christian jewelry for their adolescent children, but many young adults buy Purity Rings for themselves, too, especially those who have never had sex.  Even “secondary virgins”—those who have had sex, but chose to go back to abstinence until marriage—have also joined in the popular movement.

Love Waits. Whether cheap or expensive, fancy or simple, Purity Rings represent one thing:  true love is indeed patient.  It’s symbolic.  It embodies one’s commitment to abstain from sex until marriage.  And the ring, worn on the left ring finger, is only removed when replaced by a wedding ring.  Some people call it odd, even weird or prudish, but here’s the bare truth—just as much as our youth need advice when it comes to money, career, and education, they likewise require guidance in love, sex, and marriage.  And if Christian Jewelry can provide moral support and help instill discipline, then it surely is well worth the investment.
