What is a Bully? Recognize the Signs of Bullying

Recognizing the warning signs of bullying is the first step to protect against bullies and ease your child’s trauma.  Bullying is a form of abuse and may come in different forms – physical, verbal, emotional and psychological.

Stopbullying.gov has defined forms of bullying and acts of the bully as:

Verbal Bullying:  Saying or writing mean things.  Examples include: teasing, name-calling and inappropriate sexual comments, taunting and threatening to cause harm.

Social Bullying or Relational Bullying: Hurting someone’s reputation or relationships.  Examples include: leaving someone out on purpose, telling other children not to be friends with someone, spreading rumors about someone and embarrassing someone in public,

Physical Bullying:  Hurting a person’s body or possessions.  Examples include: hitting/kicking/pinching, spitting, tripping/pushing, taking or breaking someone’s things and making mean or rude hand gestures

Since most victims of bullying already feel isolated and helpless, they tend to keep this to themselves.  This proves to be a difficulty for a parent even for teachers when helping a child deal with bullies.

Dr. Ted Zeff, author of The Strong, Sensitive Boy suggested the following telltale signs of child being bullied:

  • Is your child disconnecting from people and isolating him/herself in their room? Although teens usually separate from the family, they normally connect more often with their friends.
  • Has your child developed physical problems such as stomachaches and headaches that interfere with their life?
  • Has your child’s schoolwork recently suffered, and is it difficult for your child to concentrate?
  • Does your child have trouble falling, or staying asleep or experience frequent nightmares?
  • Does your child seem listless, unenthusiastic, and disinterested in life?
  • Have you noticed that your child seems hypervigilant, extremely nervous, depressed, or emotionally explosive (beyond the normal teenage angst and moodiness)?

The behaviour your child is displaying may be a result of bullying and if left disregarded may develop depression and severe anxiety in your children.  In severe cases this may even result in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

If you think your child is being bullied you can help them protect against bullies.  Talk with them and find out what has been bothering them.  If bullying is the cause of these behavior changes, reassure them that they’re not at fault and that it’s the bully’s behaviour that is wrong.  Also let them know that there is nothing wrong with asking for help when they need help.

My Kid’s the Target of the Bully: How Do I Deal?

Nest Community came across this lovely website called No Place 4 Hate.  The website is run by two beautiful sisters named Lizzie and Becky who wanted to make a difference in their own way and get the word out about bullying through real stories of kids being bullied and how they coped.

If you suspect your child to be a target for bullying but refuses to tell you anything, you can share this with your child and let them see they aren’t alone.

One story that caught our attention is a young girl who convinced her mother everyday to decide when to homeschool her because of bullying by old friends.  Through her time in homeschooling, she got over her hurt and realized her self-worth.  She eventually came back for middle school at a private institution only to find herself a target for bullies – once again.   Admitting her shyness and telling her mother that ignoring the bullies only made it worse, her mother advised her to speak up with others dealing with the same issue.

More stories about bullying and overcoming bullying can be found here.

It’s inspiring how these kids found an outlet to talk about how they feel about bullying and had the courage to post their stories.  One thing common in all their stories is a message to speak up! Tell your parents or an adult you trust about it and to never deal with your problems alone.

Even with all the articles available on bullying and expert advice on “Helping My Child Deal with Bullies”, there can never be one standard way to deal with bullying.  It is always best to evaluate the situation WITH your child and decide what steps to take TOGETHER.

Kids just want to belong.  Being part of a group, with loyal friends for support growing up, will positively help protect against bullies.Watch movie online The Transporter Refueled (2015)

Choosing Homeschool Curriculum to Supplement Traditional School

There is an abundance of school material and curricula available when choosing homeschool curriculum. They vary greatly, so it can be overwhelming for a new homeschooling family.

A full breadth curriculum – Alpha Omega Curriculum and LifePak, for example – is designed to teach five core subjects and a few electives go along with it. A specific-subject curricula approach, on the other hand, focuses on mastery of subject and easily supplements any chosen curriculum – this is perfect for parents who want to reinforce lessons taught in traditional school.

Look into a one-stop resource like Nest Homeschool Curriculum.  Their supplements vary from a full-breadth curriculum to a specific-subject approach curriculum, and are perfect supplements for private/public school education.

Find out where your child is good at doing or need more focus. Sometimes it is easier to supplement your child’s education than forcing them to catch up on school work.  Supplements from Nest Homeschool Curriculum can be easily incorporated in the daily activities you enjoy with your child.

For instance, when they read books, you can encourage them to write about their daily activities with the instructional help of Shurley English.  The Shurley method is memorization of grammar rules and terms through jingles! Just get ready to join in their singing; it’ll sure get stuck in everyone’s head.  Even homeschooling mom and amazing blogger, Shez, was able to apply this to teaching her son Mathematics.

Another program you can use is Worldly Wise 3000.  You can apply the vocabulary program easily when you converse with your child. The program has word lists on new words learned, and also includes picture cards and introduces 150 new words to 400 new words per year to your child.  The beautiful part is their flexible lesson plans that allow you to complete them in less than half an hour.

While Math can be tough for most people, you can make it easy and fun.  Saxon Math can be assimilated in your daily activities as well.  You can count money and change, calculate how long until their favorite TV show or how long until meatlooaf night! The program is scripted for the parent and has a step by step approach making it easier to follow and develops logical thinking.  Try reading out the instructions for your child and apply the concepts creatively, you can make learning Math concepts fun and maybe even help you out of your Mathematic trauma!

Nest Learning Homeschool Curriculum all come with simple-to-understand lesson plans that will help you give instruction easier and provide you with immediate feedback, allowing you to easily track your child’s progress.download full movie Bad Moms

Who knows, with the help of these supplements, your child could easily be the next great poet or Zig Ziglar or create their own multinational corporation like Henry J. Heinz.

Clearly, choosing homeschool curriculum doesn’t have to be a chore!
